Memorial Day

In honor of the men and women who have served their country, the flag is raised briskly to top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to half-staff until noon. Afterwards, the stars and stripes are raised to full-staff position for the rest of the day.

  •
On Memorial Day we remember men and women who have lived and died for their country.
  •
The holiday began after Civil War. Back then it was know as Decoration Day.
  •
The preferred name for the holiday gradually changed from "Decoration Day" to "Memorial Day," which was first used in 1882.
  •
The term Memorial Day did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared official name by Federal law until 1967.
