Twitter may be getting its own lie detector.
Researchers are building a system they say will be able to verify online rumors and help separate fact from fiction on Twitter, Facebook and Internet forums.
The idea is to help governments and emergency services respond more effectively to events that first get reported on social media. The project grew out of a study of social media posts during the London riots of 2011.
The researchers say that online rumors will be classified into different types: speculation, controversy, misinformation and disinformation. The system would also categorize the sources that post the information.
