Officer Injured In Oakland Protest

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an officer was briefly hospitalized after being assaulted during a protest in Northern California over the fatal police shooting of an unarmed teen in Ferguson, Missouri.

Officer Johnna Watson, an Oakland police spokeswoman, said Saturday that a group of protesters assaulted and injured the officer Friday night. The officer was taken to the hospital and later released.

Watson says two other officers were pepper-sprayed during the protest that began in Oakland and ended in neighboring Berkeley.

Police and protesters briefly scuffled as several windows were broken and a trash can was set on fire during the street march.

Officer Jennifer Coats, a Berkeley police spokeswoman, says at least two people were arrested on suspicion of resisting or obstructing a police officer.

Another protest is planned Saturday evening.
