OC Electric Vault Explosion Kills Worker

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — An explosion and fire in an underground electrical vault has killed a worker and knocked out power to several hundred customers in Huntington Beach.

Fire Capt. Bob Culhane says firefighters called to the scene at around 12:15 p.m. Monday saw smoke pouring from the vault in the middle of the street but they had to wait nearly an hour for the power to be turned off before they could douse the fire.

A statement from Southern California Edison says a contract worker died following the blast. The name and other details about the worker were not immediately released.

Culhane says a five-member crew was working in the vault and the four other workers were not hurt.

Edison says about 350 customers are expected to be without power until midnight.
