SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Closing arguments have begun in the trial of two former California police officers who are charged in the 2011 death of a homeless man.
Prosecutors began their final statement to the jury Tuesday in the case against former Fullerton police officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli.
Ramos has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder in the death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas.
Cicinelli has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force in the July 5, 2011, confrontation between Thomas and six officers.
It's the first time an officer has been charged with murder in Orange County for actions taken in the line of duty.
Thomas died five days after the incident, which was recorded on surveillance video.
