Flight Cancellations Affect Thousands at LAX

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The arctic temperatures in the Midwest and Northeast continue to have a ripple effect at LAX, where 35 flights have been canceled since midnight.

An estimated 5,250 passengers were affected by the delays, according to spokeswoman Nancy Suey Castles.

Of the delays, 18 were departures and 17 were arrivals from Chicago's O'Hare, New York's JFK, and Washington, D.C.'s Dulles airports, and four others in the Midwest.

“Passengers on the 151 non-canceled flights experienced delays averaging 90 minutes,” Castles said in a prepared statement. “Further delays or cancellations are subject to weather conditions at these other airports.”

She estimated 186 flights had been scheduled to or from weather-impacted airports today.

Prospective passengers with scheduled flights to or from those areas were advised to be patient because planes are expected to be fully booked as airlines compensate people whose flights were canceled during the holiday  travel period.

Passengers were advised to check in via their airlines' websites, and to confirm their seats.

“While on the airlines' websites,” Castles said, “passengers are also advised to check flight status before coming to LAX and to sign up to receive automated flight-status alerts.”
