Diamond Rain On Jupiter And Saturn

The rain on Jupiter and Saturn may be made up of diamonds.

Two scientists at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Division of Planetary Sciences have suggested the idea of diamond rain on the gas giants.

They say high pressure in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn could potentially turn carbon into diamond.

Carbon particles from the upper atmosphere could fall through heavy layers of hydrogen and helium toward the cores, and the pressure along with the high heat would compress them into diamonds big enough to hold in your hand.

Scientists have previously theorized that diamond rain, maybe even liquid diamond seas, might be on Neptune and Uranus.
