3 Emerge As Top Candidates For San Diego Mayor

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Two Democrats and a Republican have emerged as top contenders for San Diego mayor in an election to fill the rest of the term of Bob Filner, who resigned amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Ten candidates submitted the required number of signatures to appear on the Nov. 19 ballot as of early Friday afternoon, hours before the filing deadline. Another 29 took out nominating papers.

Among those submitting signatures are two-term Republican City Councilman Kevin Faulconer and Nathan Fletcher, a former Republican state assemblyman who recently became a Democrat.

Democratic City Councilman David Alvarez had not submitted signatures but has been actively campaigning.

The race is officially nonpartisan but party affiliation brings money and organizational muscle. If no one wins a majority, the top two finishers advance to a runoff.
